PhD Supervisor Talk

Optimising the experience for PhD students: addressing wellbeing through coaching and good supervisory practice.

Speaker: Janet De Wilde, Professor and Director of Queen Mary Academy at Queen Mary University of London. (Previously Head of Postgraduate Professional Development, Imperial College London).

Content: In this lecture, Janet will share her experience and knowledge on how to develop a PhD student’s self-efficacy and agency in their PhD Studies. She will share the benefits of a coaching programme and the support necessary at key points in the PhD journey. She will highlight the role of good supervisory practice in the context of a student’s wellbeing. She will give recommendations for both supervisors and the graduate school.

Janet De Wilde has worked for more than 35 years in the UK Higher Education Sector. She is an Executive Board member of the UK Council for Graduate Education. She has coached PhD students since the introduction of Imperial College’s programme in 2016. She has recently researched the student experience of thesis writing which has led to key recommendations for both institutional and supervisory practice.

Time and date: Tuesday 19 January, 2021, 15.30-17.00.

Max. number of participants: 60.

Registration: Please register no later than 12 January 2021.

Venue: This PhD Supervisor Talk will be conducted online via Zoom due to the corona-virus-situation.

The Graduate school now offers two PhD Supervisor Talks per semester. These are talks for PhD supervisors at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. Other faculty members are also welcome.
