PhD Supervisor Talk: Well-being creates the best science (Online)

Arrangementsbeskrivelse

PhD Supervisor Talk

Well-being creates the best science

Content: As a top researcher and professor, Eske Willerslev has supervised scores of students at all levels of education and at several international institutions…and has no intention of stopping for the foreseeable future. In his experience, the role of supervisor offers senior researchers the possibility to be involved in the work as partners with people who, while less experienced, often think outside the box and offer refreshingly new perspectives.

Today, research is characterized by fierce competition for research funding and driven by publication standards and scientific results, and this can create a culture where egoism can thrive. After many years in academia, it has become clear to Eske that ‘good science’ is not just about producing top quality data, but it is also about creating  a research environment that fosters young students’ development by creating the framework and opportunities for research talents to grow. He considers this an important part of his role as director of the Lundbeck Foundation GeoGenetics Centre, and over the years he has changed his management strategies to focus more and more on this aspect of his work.

In this lecture, Eske Willerslev will discuss his inspirations, his experiences as a researcher and supervisor, and his strategies for creating a working environment that fosters wellbeing and satisfaction in researchers, both junior and senior.

About the speaker: Eske Willerslev is an internationally recognized evolutionary geneticist and holds a full professorship at the University of Copenhagen, as well as the prestigious Prince Philip Professorship at the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge. He is among the Web of Science’s most Highly Cited researchers within two fields. He is a foreign associate of the United States National Academy of Sciences; a member of The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters; and the holder of the Order of the Dannebrog (order of knighthood issued by her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark).
